Follow the Winter Games on your iPhone

The Winter Olympics may not receive as much coverage as the Summer Games, but that doesn’t mean they are any less exciting.

If you feel like you’d like to follow this year’s Games in Canada then check out the 2010Guide – Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games app. This free official guide is the perfect companion for anyone who wants to enjoy the Winter Olympics on TV, even if they’ve never watched any alpine sports before.

The application is excellently designed, and boasts a tidy tabbed interface, from where you can browse the ample content. You’re able to select a date from the calendar and view all of the events that are taking place on that date. Clicking on an event will bring up details of the location (including maps and plans), and information about the event itself. It’s perfect for newcomers to winter sports because each discipline is explained very clearly and succinctly. If you like the look of an event, you can add it to your Favorites, in order to track what you want to watch and when.

Once you start getting into the Games, you’ll find the Headlines section very handy. It allows you to view all of the latest news from Vancouver, as well as viewing medal tables and following the Games on Twitter.

The 2010Guide isn’t just about sport either, and the app also contains lots of information about all the off-piste activities that will take place over the course of the Games. You can view dates and descriptions of all the dance, comedy, music and arts that will take place.

Although this application has some great overviews of each sport, I feel it’s lacking a bit in terms of statistics and facts. Where are the lists of competitors, the World records, the trivia tidbits, etc.?

2010Guide – Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games makes for a nice app to have at your side while you’re watching the Games on TV. However, series winter sports fans may find it a bit lacking in depth.
